The Suir river rises in the Devil's Bit near Moneygall in County Tipperary and flows in a southerly direction past Templemore which lies to the west, through Thurles and Cahir to the boundary between counties Tipperary and Waterford near Newcastle. From a point near Newcastle , the river flows north and then east through Clonmel, Carrick on Suir and Waterford to join the River Barrow at Cheekpoint.

The main tributaries of the River Suir are the Aherlow, Anner, Clodiagh, Multeen, Drish, Tar, Linguan, Clodaigh (Portlaw) and Pollanassa. The Suir catchment covers the bulk of County Tipperary together with parts of Kilkenny, Waterford and smaller parts of Limerick and Cork. It covers much of the Golden Vale which is a highly productive farming area. The river supported milling activities historically and is famed for its fisheries as well as general recreation and amenity.Go to our Links section to follow up on same.

Topic of the Week

Every week we aim to introduce a new topic on the Suir to highlight people's attention to specific issues on the river.

We haven't lived up to that !

We are still awaiting word as to which contractor has been awarded the next two phases of the Flood Alleviation Scheme.Word has it that work will commence at the end of August.Keep an eye to our Flood Relief Scheme under Menu for developments and updates.

Night for Belarus Children:- 20th July 18.00 ....What a night was had by all!The weather was fair, the river was up,all was in place for a night to remember for the children visiting and their host families from all over the south east.Lots of work had gone on by way of preparation for the night, the clearing out of the new Boat Shed to provide a stage for Billy Bob's disco for the children;the sorting of the lights provided as ever by Frank Gubbins, and erecting them to best effect;arranging the catering for Abrakebabra, generous as ever with the food served piping hot, with good grace and friendly smiles by all their staff;the hot cuppas always there when you needed them most, provided by the ladies of the club;the presence of members of the club in great numbers to ensure everything went well, smoothly, safely and efficiently. Then the bakeries:-O'Gorman's,Hewitts,Larissas and Superquinn,a sincere thanks to you all...there wasn't a crumb to be had after the feast!

Where would we be without the boatmen, who plied the river from 18.30 to 22.30 without respite to give all the children the time of their lives! To one and all a big thank you for a job well done:- the Noonan's,Frank,Christopher and Michael;Paddy O Brien,Paul Hannigan, Tom Maloney and the Civil Defence Teams -  ye were mighty!

But there's more...one among them left work in Dublin to be in Clonmel on the night, pick up a trailer in Clonmel to transport a rig in Youghal;spent four hours on the river ferrying gleeful children up and down the river to shrieks of delight;returned the rig and captain  to Youghal and then headed back to Dublin to be in time for work in the morning!Thank you Michael Noonan, your grandad,Frank,RIP,would be mighty proud of you.

Thanks also to the Scout Hall authorities for loaning us the tables and forms.
